I am actually a researcher working on the fusion project, so let me straighten out some points.Though it may be true that from several decades we have been said that "we will have fusion in 10 years", we should look more carefully at the details of the information we are being given:- In 1980, "to have fusion" meant to build a device in which we could observe the fusion of several atoms. This has been achieved in the 1991 in the JET experiment.- In 1990, "to have fusion" meant to achieve breakeven, the point where the energy produced is more than the energy consummed. This has been achieved by the Japanese Tokamak JT-60U in 1998. (OK it may be argued that it was in a deuterium-deuterium experiment, but as far as I understand, the only problem was that the JT-60U does not have the facility to handle tritium like JET)- In 2000, "to have fusion" meant to achieve a fusion energy gain factor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusion_energy_gain_fa ... of Q=5 (breakeven correspond to Q=1). This has... not been achieved. But on the other hand, no new major tokamak has been built this last decade, and huge theoretical progress have been made thanks to the progress of computation power.- In 2010, "to have fusion" means to have a prototype that can reach Q~20, which is enough for the fusion power to be economically viable. ITER is supposed to do this around 2020. OK, maybe 2030 but hey !- In 2020-2030, the remaining problem will be that ITER cannot work on a steady-state operation, but only for a few minutes at a time. But progress in turbulence theory, materials, etc... should reasonably tackle this problem around 2050.So in summary, there has been steady progress in the fusion research since 1950, but it's not so obvious for the general public as people are only interested in some giga-watts in the electric network and this won't be possible before 2040.Now a quick disclaimer: some informations I gave may be inaccurate for I am not a specialist of the fusion power history. My specialisation is the theoretical study of turbulence produced by high-energy particles in Tokamaks.Also please forgive my English for I'm French..
